Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Scott was raised an all-only daughter by her grandmother. Scott graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. While working two part-time jobs, Scott took classes in secondary teaching at Temple University. She hoped she would become an English secondary school teacher. After three years of being teacher's assistant and studying, her dream of becoming a high-school English teacher came to a halt. She started her career as a spoken word artist performing her own pieces during live poetry readings. She eventually linked up together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. They ended up collaborating in writing You Got Me. Then, during Roots' show she came out as an artist. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She was also able to gain experience on stage as she appeared in the Canada tour of the Broadway the musical Rent. She was signed by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
